Welcome to our waka

Nearly a decade ago seven men stood together on the shores of an inland sea wondering where they were bound. It takes a big canoe to carry all those lives and a Kimball organ. Some journeys are Journeys. They set out together, shoulders heaving, faces set to the open water and rising sun.

Polynesian boat builders are some of the most advanced engineers the human race has produced….master craftsmen who use unique plants with specific characteristics for each part of the ocean-going vessels they build—tall, strong vesi trees (Intsia bijuga) for masts; Pandanus leaves woven by women into sails, hibiscus fiber with impressive sheer strength for rigging ropes; Macaranga graeffeana wood for buoyancy. These major artists of long-distance sea-faring built everything from the plants of their island homes…Tangier 57 aspires to be like that, except with jetpacks, spaceships and various other deus ex machina powered by music.

Tangier 57 has always been a vibe, a tribe and a conveyance of fellowship. “It is people!” is the culmination of years worth of that fellowship. During the arc of that time we have traveled from our lounge roots to the fringes of classical, rock, jazz and noise. Landing where ever we feel best. Saying our musical piece with what ever tonal vernacular suits us, and the story, best. In “It is People!” themes of journey, dualism, sustainability, rationalism, irrationalism and digital deconstruction weave us across and in/out of a mysterious Tiki infused seascape. We’re comfortable with the dérive. Drifting is all about the how of getting somewhere. We’re lucky/honored/blessed with families/friends/cohorts who encourage/berate/tolerate our enterprise. We’re graced with the wonder of our home place. Wherever our eyes find our feet, the great Gitchi Gummi is in our heart and thought. Its vast expanse calls, guides and reminds us of our purpose.

Congratulations — we just watched the video on the DNT website. We loved it! I too frequently find inspiration in cheese sauce and mustard.
